A physical therapist is a licensed professional that specializes in helping restore your mobility. This may be done through reducing pain or progressing your strength or balance. Physical therapists must pass a licensing examination in your state. Most physical therapists have either a Master of Science in Physical Therapy degree or a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Like physicians, many physical therapists choose to specialize in a specific practice area.
Kansas is a “direct access” state for physical therapy services. This means that you can be seen by a physical therapist without a referral from your doctor. However, in order to have your physical therapy visits paid for under your insurance plan, a referral or doctor’s order may be needed.
It is recommended that you find a physical therapist that has experience working with your specific diagnosis, to better meet your needs. Your doctor or even a family member may have a physical therapist that they recommend. The American Physical Therapy Association has a tool called “PT Finder” on their website, apta.org. You can search for a physical therapist by zip code or specialty.
