Hello, my name is Burt Deweese. I’m a physical therapist here at Rebound Physical Therapy. And today, I’d like to talk about vertigo, some of the common causes of vertigo, and ways that we can get rid of it.
So what is vertigo? Vertigo is the sensation of spinning, whether the room is spinning around you or the sensation that you’re spinning inside of the room. There are several underlying causes of vertigo that we can investigate. One of the most common causes that we see is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV.
In this condition, you have little crystals or rocks that sit inside your inner ear system. And if those crystals come off, they can float into the loops and canals inside your inner ear. With the head changing positions, that can provoke dizziness. So whether you’re looking down to the ground, looking up to the sky or ceiling, getting in bed, or rolling over in bed, that can provoke these crystals to move inside those loops and create that dizziness sensation.
How Physical Therapy Can Relieve Vertigo Symptoms
Here at Rebound, we can do an evaluation to assess which ear is affected and which canal or loop is involved. In this way, we can get rid of your dizziness. The treatment for it consists of putting you back on a table, laying your head down and rolling over to your side, and then having you sit back up, so we can move those crystals back to where they came from and get them back so they’re settled in.
If you feel like you may have dizziness from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), please give us a call at (785) 271-5533 . We can set up an evaluation and get things going, get you taken care of, and get you back in action.
