Are You Ready to Celebrate National PT Month?
We love October at Rebound Physical Therapy. No, it’s not because it’s the height of spooky season (at least not entirely). We love October because it’s National Physical Therapy Month!
Thirty years ago, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) set aside one month a year to celebrate all the benefits of physical therapy. Every October, physical therapists across the country ask their patients to share how PT has helped improve their health and well-being.
When many people think of physical therapy, they usually go to two places: pain relief and post-surgical rehabilitation. While those benefits are undeniable, we wanted to take this October to share some of the lesser-known ways that physical therapy can help you live a stronger, healthier, and more active life.
To do this, we’ve highlighted five lesser-known services we offer at Rebound Physical Therapy. If you think you might benefit from these services–or our excellent pain management and post-surgical rehabilitation programs–call to schedule an appointment today!

5 Unexpected Ways Physical Therapy Can Help You Thrive
- We can help prevent falls. We’re kicking things off with our fall prevention program, as that’s this year’s focus for National PT Month. Falls are a major health issue in the United States, especially among adults over 65, and a leading cause of injury and hospitalization among that age group. Everyone’s fall risk is different. Several factors can increase your risk of falling, including age, loss of muscle mass, joint pain, visual impairment, gait impairment, and more. The more risk factors you have, the more you’ll benefit from our fall prevention services. We take a comprehensive approach by addressing your specific risk factors. This might include helping you build core strength, improving your stability through balance challenges, or addressing vertigo and dizziness through vestibular therapy.
- We can help you manage a neurological disorder. Physical therapy is also important in managing the symptoms of neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease, muscular sclerosis, or stroke. The conditions affect your nervous system and can cause various physical, emotional, and cognitive side effects. Physical therapy is essential in helping you manage those symptoms so you can stay mobile and independent for as long as possible. We’ll work closely with you, your caregivers, and members of your healthcare team to create a personalized treatment program that addresses your specific symptoms. We can address balance and gait issues and improve overall strength and mobility.
- We can help you manage difficult chronic pain syndromes. Pain management is a common reason people seek out physical therapy, usually after an injury or surgery. But what happens when your pain is chronic and stems from notoriously difficult-to-manage conditions like fibromyalgia? This shouldn’t come as a surprise: physical therapy is here to help! Although it can be difficult to get started, exercise does help manage fibromyalgia symptoms. We’ll work with you to create a program customized to your ability levels, with an emphasis on targeted strength training and gentle aerobic exercises. We also offer several tools for acute pain management, such as myofascial release, trigger point therapy, or electrical stimulation.
- We can help you get back to work after an injury. Working a physically demanding job can increase your risk of suffering a painful, debilitating injury. Our team has experience navigating the worker’s compensation process and can help you get the treatment you need. We also offer Work Hardening, a specialized program that helps you return to your pre-injury fitness levels so you can return to work with confidence. We tailor this program based on the specific requirements of your job, essentially “training” you in the movements you need at the workplace.
- We can help you prepare for surgery. Post-surgical rehabilitation is one of the most well-known benefits of physical therapy. But did you know that we also offer pre-surgical rehabilitation? Pre-surgical rehabilitation (also known as “prehab”) focuses on preparing your body for the stresses of surgery through targeted exercises and personalized pain management techniques. Prehab offers several benefits. In addition to helping reduce pain or discomfort as you wait for your surgery, it essentially gives you a headstart on your post-surgical rehabilitation. You’ll know what exercises to expect and will have the opportunity to become familiar with crutches, slings, or other equipment you might use in the immediate weeks after your procedure.

3 Tips to Improve Nutrition in the Fall
What do you think of when you hear the word fall? Crisp refreshing days? Bonfires and changing leaves? Pumpkin carving? What if you were to focus on your nutrition this fall? The food we eat has a significant impact on several elements of our health, particularly our heart health. Obesity, weight gain, physical inactivity, stress, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol all increase the risk of heart disease and other cancers.
Considering the importance of nutrition, it’s never the wrong time to think critically about your diet. At Rebound Physical Therapy, we know that fall can be busy, which is why we want to give you a few simple tips on how to improve your nutrition this season.
- Make a hearty soup: Making a large pot of soup every weekend is a great way to improve your nutrition throughout the week. Soups, while they can take several hours to cook, usually require very little active time. When it comes to recipes to try, your options are virtually endless. There’s hearty bean soup, pureed root vegetable soup, winter squash soup, traditional chicken noodle soup, chili, and so much more! And with temperatures dropping, what tastes better than a warm stew?
- Select leaner sources of protein: Did you know that regularly eating red meat and processed meat can raise the risk of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and certain cancers? So, instead of opting for red meat, select leaner sources of protein for your meals and recipes. This can include chicken, turkey, beans, lentils, low fat yogurt, fish, tofu, and nuts. If you think you need a little more help developing a healthy diet this fall, contact Rebound Physical Therapy today. We can help you develop an exercise and nutrition plan that works for your needs.
- Try to eat more root vegetables: The majority of root vegetables are available all year, but they are most ripe from fall to spring. During the cooler months, garlic, onions, ginger, turnips, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, and parsnips provide plenty of flavor and nutrients. Many root vegetables are high in folate, which is essential for cell growth and metabolism!
