The Incredible Benefits of Aquatic Therapy for Pain Relief

Jul8th 2024

For many people, the thought of exercise alone sounds nearly impossible due to joint pain or functional mobility challenges. But with aquatic therapy, you can achieve your rehabilitation goals with low-impact exercises guided by our experts. I am Toni Drinkard, a physical therapist here at Rebound Physical Therapy in Topeka, Kansas. And today we’re going to talk about the benefits of aquatic therapy.

How Aquatic Therapy Can Help Your Rehabilitation

We are so fortunate to have a therapy-sized pool in our clinic, and it’s wonderful because the buoyancy of the water takes pressure and weight off of the joints. No matter if you’re in chronic pain, coming back from an athletic injury, or you have balance issues or difficulty coordinating movement, aquatic therapy makes it possible for you to move easier. Getting you in the water and helping you move in a stress-reduced environment can really help progress you to the next level in your rehabilitation.

Aquatic Therapy Provides Low Impact Exercise to Give Your Joints a Break

With aquatic therapy, we have a deep-water section where you can be at 0% weight-bearing, and that allows your joints and muscles to fully move to their capacity in a controlled setting. We’ll give you a flotation device; and the physical therapist will be working with you one-on-one, watching your movement patterns to make sure that you’re moving correctly and you can control the movements.

Build Your Strength, Balance, and Functional Mobility in the Water

We also have a 4-foot section of our therapy pool where you can practice weight-bearing exercises, balance stabilization against the flow of water, and strengthen at the same time. The water gives a new dynamic, and for those who can’t tolerate the ground reaction forces of working on land, the pool is a perfect environment to work on functional mobility, balance, and strengthening.
