How Myofascial Release Improves Mobility & Relieves Pain

Jun17th 2024

There’s a part of your body called fascia that aids in muscle movement and health. But sometimes it can get restricted and lead to unwanted conditions. I’m Toni Drinkard, a physical therapist here at Rebound Physical Therapy in Topeka, Kansas. Today, we’re going to talk about myofascial restrictions and how those restrictions can lead to functional immobility and even other impairments such as balance disorders and pain.

What Is a Myofascial Restriction?

Our body works in slings—we have front slings, we have back slings—and those are myofascial connections. Myofascial is a big word for what is basically like saran wrap (fascia) over the muscles (myo-). The fascia overlays your muscles, and if it is restricted, then the muscles underneath it will not be able to fully work at the capacity that they were meant to.

How Can a Myofascial Release Improve Functional Movement?

Myofascial release is essentially a specialized type of massage that alleviates those restrictions. Coming in for physical therapy for a myofascial release can help improve your functional movement, which then improves your strength and balance too. It is important to address myofascial restrictions because overall, they can affect your ability to move and do the things that you love to do.
