Why Proper Breathing Is Essential for Exercise

Jun26th 2024

We all know that it’s important to breathe when you exercise, but did you know there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it? I’m Toni Drinkard, a physical therapist with Rebound Physical Therapy here in Topeka, Kansas. Today we’re going to talk about correct breathing and why it’s important, no matter if you’re an athlete or if you’re working at a desk for eight hours a day.

How Improper Breathing Can Impact Your Health

During the pandemic, we were wearing masks and breathing differently. A lot of people came into our clinic with shoulder and TMJ issues because they were breathing with their neck muscles and not their diaphragm.

That really turned on a light bulb for us here at Rebound, and now we focus on training breathing with almost all our patients. Why? Because if you’re not breathing properly, it creates a muscle imbalance that causes your movement to not be as efficient as it could be.

How Posture and Breathing Exercises Can Help You

Whether you’re running, playing a sport, or just sitting at your desk, posture and breathing training exercises are important to prevent incorrect postures that can lead to other pains and dysfunctions. It starts with breathing into your diaphragm, which is part of your core stabilization.
