Aquatic Exercise for Seniors for Better Health

Dec11th 2024

The current situation with anyone who is aging into that senior category is their muscles are weakening and joints are stiffening. This means that everyday activities may become painful or difficult. These issues deter seniors from exercising, yet they need two and a half hours of weekly exercise for good health.

The good news is that there’s a simple solution seniors can use to stay active and improve their health. I’m Kalee Madorin with Rebound Physical Therapy’s Health Promotions team, and today I want to talk to you about how seniors can take advantage of aquatic exercise for better health.

What Is Aquatic Exercise?

Aquatic exercise is simply exercise in the water. This solves those issues of weakening muscles and stiffening joints for seniors who want to exercise because water gives you the buoyancy effect. You’re not fighting gravity, you’re floating. This reduces the stress on your joints and muscles.

Benefits of Aquatic Exercise for Seniors

One positive of aquatic exercise is you can do a group class, which is way more fun because you’re doing it with multiple people. This allows for the socialization that we all need and crave even into those senior years.

Some other benefits of aquatic exercise are that it:

  • Helps you improve your cardiovascular health
  • Is a very high-volume, calorie burning activity
  • Helps you stay or become more limber physically

How Rebound Can Help You Get Back in Action
