Get Back in Action with Aquatic Therapy
Whether you’re rehabilitating after an injury or managing a chronic condition like arthritis, movement plays an essential role in improving overall function. But what happens when movement itself hurts?
At Rebound Physical Therapy, we have a solution: aquatic therapy. By moving physical therapy into a gently heated pool, many of our patients can rebuild the strength and mobility they need for everyday life while placing less stress on painful joints.
What Is Aquatic Therapy?
Aquatic therapy is a type of physical therapy that takes place in a pool. As with land-based physical therapy, it starts with a comprehensive evaluation to understand your needs, and your treatment plan will be individualized to your goals. A physical therapist guides each session and adjusts treatment as you improve.
The difference? Everything takes place in the water, which offers additional benefits not available in a traditional gym setting.
Why the Water Makes Exercise Easier
1. Buoyancy reduces stress on your joints.
Water supports part of your body weight, reducing pressure on painful joints and healing tissues. As a result, you can often perform movements that would otherwise be too uncomfortable on land.
2. Natural resistance builds strength.
Every movement through the water creates gentle resistance from multiple directions, allowing you to strengthen muscles without relying on heavy weights or high-impact exercises.
3. Warm water helps muscles relax.
Our pool is heated to encourage muscle relaxation and may help improve circulation. Warm water can also make stretching and movement feel more comfortable, especially for people dealing with stiffness or muscle guarding.
4. Water improves balance.
Because the water slows movement and helps support your body, you can safely practice balance activities with a reduced risk of falling.
What Happens During an Aquatic Therapy Session?
Let’s clear up one misconception first: you don’t need to know how to swim in order to participate in aquatic therapy. Exercises will generally take place in waist- or hip-deep water and typically emulate land-based exercises that improve mobility, strength, coordination, and endurance. This might include:
- Walking through the water in different directions
- Range-of-motion activities to improve joint mobility
- Leg and arm strengthening exercises using the water’s resistance
- Core stabilization exercises to improve trunk control
- Balance and gait training
- Cardiovascular exercises that increase endurance without excessive joint stress
Who Can Benefit from Aquatic Therapy?
We generally recommend aquatic therapy when pain or weakness makes traditional exercises difficult, making it an effective choice for:
- Rehabilitation after joint replacement surgery
- Sports injuries
- Back or neck pain
- Arthritis
- Fibromyalgia and other types of chronic pain
- Balance disorders
- Neurological conditions such as stroke or multiple sclerosis
Starting in the Pool, Then Progressing to Land
One of the greatest advantages of aquatic therapy is that it allows you to begin rehabilitation with less discomfort and greater confidence. At Rebound Physical Therapy, we often use aquatic therapy to build a foundation for land-based exercises.
You’ll start your rehab in the pool, and then, as symptoms decrease and strength and endurance improve, we’ll gradually introduce more weight-bearing exercises on land. In many cases, you’ll eventually move on entirely to traditional land-based physical therapy.
This step-based progression allows you to experience many benefits, including:
- Improved mobility
- Better walking mechanics
- Increased strength
- Greater endurance
- Improved balance
- Higher confidence with movement
As with land-based PT, aquatic therapy is never a one-size-fits-all program. An athlete recovering from a sports injury might spend only a few sessions in the pool before transitioning to land-based therapy. In contrast, a patient with arthritis might benefit from a blend of aquatic therapy and land-based therapy sessions.
Our team works with you to determine the best approach based on your diagnosis, pain levels, or mobility limitations.
Build Strength and Endurance Without the Strain
Pain and limited movement don’t have to keep you from the benefits of physical therapy. Aquatic therapy offers a comfortable, effective way to begin rebuilding strength, improving mobility, and restoring confidence when land-based exercise feels like too much.
If you think you might benefit from aquatic therapy, schedule an appointment with Rebound Physical Therapy. Our team can evaluate your symptoms and develop a personalized plan to help you get back in action.

Back-to-School Tips for Healthy Kids
To ensure your child’s physical well-being during the school year, follow these simple recommendations:
🎒 Backpack Awareness
Help your child choose a well-fitted backpack and show them how to wear it with both straps to distribute weight evenly. Teach your child to pack what’s necessary and avoid overloading their backpack.
🪑 Good Posture
Remind your child to sit back in their chair at school with both feet flat on the floor and use proper ergonomics when using electronic devices.
🤸 Stretch Breaks
Encourage short breaks during class to stand, stretch, and move, preventing discomfort and stiffness from prolonged sitting.
⚽ Active Play
Encourage physical activity outside of school hours through sports, play, or dancing for overall health and fitness.
😴 Sleep Routine
Establish a consistent sleep schedule to support concentration and overall well-being.
Following these everyday tips can promote your child’s physical health and comfort throughout the school year.

Clinic Wellness Tips from the Couch 🐾
Hi hoomans,
Oliver would like to admit something. He is not the most active member of the Rebound team. His personal fitness style is built around motivational lounging, and he takes this role very seriously.
From his favorite spot on the clinic couch, he shares his best "wellness" wisdom.
- 🐾 Stretch once, nap twice.
- 🐾 Hydrate by politely requesting someone else bring the water bowl.
- 🐾 Prioritize recovery time even if you have not actually done anything.
He may not be leading warm-ups or demonstrating exercises, but he excels at boosting morale, supervising from a very comfortable position, and reminding everyone that rest is an important part of any routine.
Stay active, stay pawsitive, and always save room on the couch for me.
