Effective and safe movement starts with good balance and a strong core. I’m Toni Drinkard, a physical therapist here at Rebound Physical Therapy in Topeka, Kansas. Today, we’re going to talk about how vital balance and core stabilization are in your daily life.
Why Is Balance Vital?
If you think about how stable you feel walking on a concrete surface compared to how you feel walking on a shifting surface like sand, you’ll understand what I mean by balance and core stabilization. You need both of those skills to successfully walk on sand or other unsteady surfaces.
Likewise, if you have neuropathy or any kind of post-op injury, that’s going to affect your balance. And those really need to be addressed because if we don’t have balance, it’s like we’re walking on sand the whole time without stability.
Why Is Core Strength Vital?
If you imagine a belt that wraps all the way around your hips and your spine, those are your core muscles. And there’s about 29 of those muscles, so it’s not just your abdominal muscles. If your pelvis is rocking like a teeter totter, that’s not helping your lower extremities as you move. Then you have to compensate in other places, which can lead to pain or injury. That’s why core stabilization is also vital for healthy movement.
Reach Out to Rebound for Balance Training and Core Stabilization
We want to make efficient movement with natural, fluid motion. And that’s where balance training along with core stabilization comes in to address the abdominals and the deep rotators. Physical therapy can help you train all those systems to improve balance and core strength so you can get better to get back in action. If that sounds like something you need help with, give us a call at (785) 271-5533 today.
